Our Decluttering & Home Decor Goals for 2018

2018 is gearing up to be the year I accomplish some home related goals I've had on my list for months, so I wanted to tell you a little bit about our home and what my plans are!

About Our Home

The first thing to mention about our house is that it's not really ours at all. We currently rent a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom townhouse with the goal of saving up for a down payment on our own house.

Our townhouse has a unique and somewhat frustrating layout. It's 4 half floors, with a 2 level basement. The first floor consists of our entryway, half bath and living room. The second level is our kitchen and a dining room that over looks the living room. The third level is our bedroom and the main bathroom, and the forth level is Mason's room and a spare room (soon to be play room).

I hate the multiple floors and find it difficult to accomplish a flow when it comes to décor and use of space. Since we don't own it, we are somewhat limited with what we're allowed to change, but they do allow us to paint. My least favorite room is the kitchen because I hate the cupboards (or lack of), and the counters.

As a blogger, I find myself not sharing many photos of my home because it's just not quite where I want it to be yet- which is why 2018 is my year to change that. I will share photos along the way.

My Decluttering Goals

Before living here, we lived in a 2 bedroom apartment downtown. It was a nice, new apartment with a huge bathroom and new kitchen. I loved everything about it aside from the lack of space. Somehow we managed to have all of our belongings there and it didn't feel cluttered at all.

Since moving into the townhouse in 2015, it seems like our belongings have tripled and I have no idea where all of this stuff came from. Our son was a baby when we lived in our apartment, and he's now a preschooler with a LOT more stuff, so that's definitely part of it. We have a lot more space, but the rooms are smaller and the need for decluttering and organizing is huge.

My goals are:

  • Go through every room and throw out or donate all items that aren't being used, don't spark joy, and don't contribute to the room in any way.
  • Donate all blankets that are not used regularly (we have A LOT of blankets)
  • Get rid of knick knacks and home décor that doesn't go with the look I'm envisioning
  • Come up with a better toy storage solution for Mason's smaller toys (Playmobil, Hot Wheels, trains etc)
  • Get rid of dishes that we don't use regularly. We are only 3 people and rarely have company over for dinner, so how many dishes do we really need?
  • Get rid of a lot of clothes and possibly create a capsule wardrobe
  • Create a fresh and minimal feel by keeping surfaces clear of clutter

My Home Decor Goals

My taste in home decor has evolved a lot over the years and I have a lot of plans for bringing in some interesting pieces this year. A couple years ago I became obsessed with the updated farmhouse style that so many Instagrammers are doing, but soon realized it's not me and I like something a bit more modern. Currently I love bright white spaces, monochrome Scandinavian style, geometric shapes and baskets. I like white walls because essentially they go with everything, and will match any decor I go with.

I also love meaningful decor items like photos in beautiful frames, vacation souvenirs, etc.

My home decor goals for 2018 are:

  • Painting our bedroom white
  • Painting the bathroom white
  • Updating the bathroom mats
  • Replacing my night stand with a smaller one to create more room
  • Bringing in cozy but modern area rugs
  • Update doormats and bring in runners
  • Adding a large basket to the upstairs hallway for blankets/throws
  • Putting curtains up in our bedroom (finally)
  • Painting the kitchen white
  • Updating large kitchen utensils and utensil holder
  • Turning our spare bedroom into a play room
  • Print and frame wedding photos

I will keep you updated with my progress! The first thing on my list is our bedroom!

What are your home related goals for 2018? Comment below!

  1. I am in the exact same situation as you! Currently renting a 5 bedroom house - way too big for our needs right now since it's just me, my boyfriend, and my brother in the basement. And I definitely find it difficult with older houses to try and make it feel like home. I have a lot of home decor goals this year as well, but I can't spoil the surprises because they'll be appearing on my blog in the coming months. Looking forward to seeing all your progress!

    1. Totally agree with the older houses comment! Ours is older and it’s hard to make it feel like home too. I found it so much easier to decorate our last apartment because it was a lot newer. I’m hoping that painting and bringing in more modern decor pieces will make things feel more updated.

  2. We have two adults, two toddlers and a big black lab living in a 750 square foot house. I've had to purge so many things, but I've actually come to love minimizing and wish I had more time to go through our things and get rid of more. I used to be a huge packrat, and while I still save sentimental things I've become much more ruthless when it comes to random junk that I think I might use someday. No space for that. Now I'm looking forward to your solutions for toy storage!
