50 Kind And Creative Elf On The Shelf Ideas

Last year after much deliberation I decided to welcome an Elf On The Shelf into our home. His name is Griswold and you can read about my decision to "adopt" him here.

Since we've made the decision to not follow the book that came with our Elf, his activities are a bit different than others. He does not get into mischief or misbehave, and he does not spy on us. Griswold comes every year to suggest fun family activities, good deeds, and brings little treats throughout the holiday season. A lot of these activities are things you probably do in the winter regardless, but having your Elf present the ideas to the kids brings a little bit of holiday fun to your home.

If you have a similar little helper Elf in your house, here are 50 kind and creative Elf activities for you to try this year:

Surviving Black Friday- The Best Tips & Tricks To Make It Through The Day

Let me just start by saying that I am really excited to be writing this post. A little known fact about me is that I am actually a Black Friday expert. I mean, I don't have a degree in it or anything (if that existed I totally would), but I've had my fair share of Black Friday's to know how to expertly navigate my way through.

I've been going to Black Friday with my mom since I was a pre-teen. From the moment I waited in my first all night line outside of Walmart- I was hooked.  We plan for this day months in advance, and perfectly calculate our every move to insure we get what we went there for. I am Canadian, but my mom lives within 15 minutes of the Maine border, and I'm about an hour from it. We buy the majority of our items at Walmart, then either move on to other stores in the States, or go back to Canada to hit the sales there. Black Friday has only been a thing in Canada for the past few years, and although the sales aren't comparable to those in the States, it's still nice to have the option of shopping at home. Since my son was born 3 years ago, I have been hitting the sales here in Canada more often for convenience sake, but the same Black Friday tips apply.

Here are my tips and tricks for planning for and getting through Black Friday:

Dear Friend Who Ghosted Me; I'm Happy and I Hope You Are Too

I wanted to begin by saying that this post is outside the realm of what I usually write. It's not parenting, home or product related, but I think a lot of people can relate to this, and writing is therapeutic to me, so here we go.

Nautical Boat Wedding In Shediac New Brunswick

Today, September 3rd 2017 is our ONE year anniversary! I can't believe it's already been a year! I wanted to share some of my favourite wedding photos with you all!

There are WAYYY too many to share them all, but here is a round up of our favourites. We got married in Shediac New Brunswick on the Shediac Bay Cruise Boat. I've been going to Shediac every Summer with my family since I was a baby. It's my favourite place, and Mitch and I have gone every year since we met, so it made sense to have our wedding there. After our ceremony we took our guests on a 2 hour boat ride around the bay. After the boat ride, we had dinner, cake and speeches at at Captain Dan's restaurant on the wharf, then drove down to Parlee Beach for sunset photos and a walk on the beach. It was a perfect way to unwind after a busy day. Our friends and family followed us back to our cottages after for gift opening, and then we went back to Captain Dans for a party on the wharf.

Review: Canadian Made Co!

Disclaimer: This product was sent to me for review, however all opinions and thoughts are my own.

I am really excited to be sharing my review of the City Of Canada sweater from Canadian Made Co. You can find their products here https://canadianmade.co/.

The first thing I noticed about this product was the amazing quality! Since they are a new company, I wasn't sure what to expect, and I was really impressed. The inside is a soft fleecy material, which was perfect for windy days by the ocean during our recent camping trip. This sweater is my new favorite and I can tell it's going to last a long time.

Being Present: How A Trip To The Moon Taught Me To Put My Cell Phone Away

I was tucking my son into bed, as I always do last night. If I'm being completely honest, my mind was on all the things I had to do before bed. I'm a busy full time working mom, along with being a lifestyle blogger and freelance writer. Usually when I lay in bed at night, I'm emailing, working on social media, writing, or researching.

My 3 year old was not in the mood to sleep and kept going over to his window.

How To Survive Your 10 Year High School Reunion

Then there's that moment of panic when you get a Facebook invitation to your 10 year reunion and think "shit- what have I done with my life?"

Sunscreen Do's and Don'ts for Today's Parent

I think we can all agree that Summer weather is officially here! Mom groups on social media are being bombarded with questions like:

What are the best all natural sunscreens?
What sunscreen can my baby use?
What are the worst sunscreens on the market?
Is sunscreen going to seep poison into my child's body?

I'm here to break it down for you in the most simple way possible. I love sunscreen and I wear it every single day. I didn't hear about all natural sunscreens until a couple of years ago, so basically I'm probably already full of poisonous chemicals from years of sunscreen use, but there MAY be some hope for my kid, right?

Easy Summer Car Organization Tips

Summer is right around the corner! If you're anything like I used to be, your vehicle might be a hot mess, and will only get worse with summer activities, road trips, beach days, etc.

I find that too many people over complicate car organization with Pinterest tips and "hacks" that leave you with a car full of hanging shoe organizers and things you don't need. While these type of organizers might work for some families, I find they just add to the clutter and end up full of crumbs, sand, etc. I've come up with super simple car organization ideas that work for us, and should work for you too.

5 Signs That You Need A Major Life Change

Sometimes the winds of change are a gentle breeze, whispering ideas, and softly coaxing us towards something new. Other times they're a full blown tornado, sweeping us instantly into a new season of life.

A few months ago I felt the winds blowing, and somehow without me even noticing, I got swept away.

5 Ways I'm A Super Safety Mom (And Proud Of It)

* This post contains an affiliate link and if you purchase a product from the link I may receive compensation.

It's been a little over 3 years now that I've been annoying people with my cautiousness. From the moment I found out I was pregnant with my son, I've just been really obsessed with keeping him alive, ya know? I wouldn't let people smoke anywhere near me when I was pregnant, I didn't lift anything heavy, eat deli meat, and I didn't drink caffeine.

My cautiousness carried over to my new found motherhood, and will probably be with me my entire life. Here are 5 ways I'm a proud super safety mom:

5 Ways Comparing Myself to Other Mothers Has Made me a Better Mom

Is comparison the thief of joy? Maybe, but only if you let it be.

I think comparison is a healthy tool we can use to improve ourselves. We constantly see posts about not comparing ourselves to other people and how damaging that can be, but I think it's all in how you look at it. Instead of feeling down on ourselves, why not be inspired and strive to improve?

Ice Cream & Open Houses

Growing up in a small town means you need to make your own fun. Teenagers party in fields, or drive around aimlessly looking for something to do. Mothers take their kids to swimming holes or local parks on hot days. It's a kind of slow, sleepy bliss that's simultaneously exhilarating and magical. You don't really notice how special those days were until you get older, and move away.

One of my favorite childhood summer memories wasn't running through a sprinkler, or having a picnic at the park. It was a tradition that my mom started, without even realizing she was creating something special at all.

Mabel's Labels Review!

Is anyone else sick of losing their child's belongings? I know I am. My son goes to preschool, and although the teachers there are amazing and 99% of the time don't lose his things, sometimes unlabeled items get sent home with us by accident, or a new teacher accidentally sends something home with the wrong child. It happens- we're only human.

Up until now I've been labeling Mason's items with permanent marker- which turns out isn't so permanent and comes off of his cups almost every time I wash them. Who wants to re-label their kids stuff all the time? Not this mama.

My Review of The Maritime Basket!

I'm really excited today to be sharing my review of the beautiful Maritime Basket by Sewcialite on Etsy. Let me start off by saying that the owner of this shop is an absolute dream to work with. She's a hard working mama of 2, and you can read a little bit more about her life on her blog here: www.sewcialiteblog.wordpress.com.

I was really impressed by the fact that she hand makes all of these baskets, bowls, and other rope products at home- and they're really great quality.

My Molar Pregnancy Experience

Hi everyone. I promised this post as soon as I got my pathology results back, so here we go.

On January 2nd 2017, after testing for a few days and showing symptoms, I got a positive pregnancy test. My first symptoms of pregnancy were actually really vivid dreams. I remember having the craziest dreams when I was pregnant with Mason, and that made me wonder if I was pregnant again this time.

I felt a bit "off" about this pregnancy from the beginning. I was excited, but cautiously so. I pushed those feelings aside as normal miscarriage worries that every woman has. We excitedly started talking about names, making gender guesses, planning nursery themes etc. I even bought a few baby items (that I now have tucked away for next time).

Parenting in Joyful Chaos- Raising Two Under Two- Book Review and Giveaway!

Last night I had the pleasure of reading the e-book Parenting in Joyful Chaos- Raising Two Under Two by Stacy Taylor.

Stacy describes her journey of pregnancy and parenting in a raw and honest way that will resonate with all parents regardless of how many children you have. Even as a mother of one, I felt her struggles and triumphs, and walked away with some great tips.

I found this a nice light read, and was able to finish it in one evening, which was great since most books usually take me longer to get through- aka every time I sit down to read Mason yells "MOMMM" every 5 minutes. Most of you can relate, I'm sure.

Stacy was gracious enough to send me a copy of her e-book, and one for one of you!!

Please go to my Facebook page Adventures at Home to find out how to enter to win your own copy!

Why Having a Small Birthday Party for your Toddler is the Best!

I'm a self diagnosed Pinterest addict, like many of you are, and I often stumble upon children's birthday party ideas that Martha Stewart herself would repin.

It seems that planning a child's birthday party is almost as stressful as planning a wedding these days, and I'm saying no- at least until he's old enough to request his own birthday party ideas.

How to Teach Toddlers About Gun Safety

A couple of months ago when my almost 3 year old took a sweet potato out of the cupboard and pretended to shoot me with it, I was appalled. "What does this mean!?" I wondered. Where did he learn this? We don't allow toy guns in the house, and we monitor what he's allowed to watch on TV, so I assume he picked up up from the kids at daycare.

I immediately turned to our local mom Facebook group to ask if this was "normal" behavior and all of the mom's who commented assured me that it was. They told me that all kids play pretend, and that I had nothing to be worried about.

DIY Yarn Wall Hanging

Hi everyone! I've got another DIY for you today, and I'm really excited about it!

I've been trying to figure out something to  hang in our upstairs stairwell, and nothing has been catching my eye. I decided to try this project last night, and I'm really happy with the results.

Only 3 things are required to make this wall hanging- a stick, some yarn, and a pair of scissors to cut the yarn. Pretty simple right?

DIY Farmers Market Sign

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to make a quick post about this really simple DIY I just did. I've been wanting a sign like this to hang in our dining room, and ended up making it using things I already had around the house, plus $1.35 in paper printed at staples.

I used an old sign that didn't fit our current decor and repainted it using paints from my last DIY. I also printed the paper for the chalk stencil at Staples :)

Enjoy!

Favourite Dollar Store Finds- March 2017

As you may be able to tell from previous  posts, I love a good deal. Lately I've really been into minimalist/Scandinavian design, which includes a lot of neutral colours, and clean lines. I love our local Dollarama for a lot of things, but home decor usually isn't one of them. I've been pleasantly surprised to find some great home decor items in the past couple of months that I wanted to share with you.

This striped clothes hamper. I saw it and immediately thought of Mason's room. It sits in the corner of his open closet, and I use it to hold his folded up blankets. He's still a blankie baby, so I love that he can grab one whenever he wants, and it's low enough for him to do that without asking me for help.

This would also be really cute to hold toys, or for it's intended use as a clothes hamper. It was $4.

I loved this wire basket the moment I saw it. It reminded me of a much more expensive one I've seen online, and I've seen a lot of similar items on my favourite home decor blogs. I actually bought 2 of them. This one to use for fruit on our table, and another that sits on our kitchen counter holding my most used cleaning products. They were $4 each.

The next 2 items are really cute storage baskets I found for $3-$4 each. I love the grey fabric, and the size of them. I bought 2 of the rectangle ones for our bookshelf. They're perfect for books or to hide Mason's toys that might be laying around.

I'm using the round one for Mitch's hats! He always throws his hats on top of our dresser, and I hate seeing them laying around. It just adds to the visual clutter in our room, which is why I didn't want a hat rack. This is the perfect size to hold several hats.

This one is actually a DIY, but all of the supplies were purchased at the dollarstore. The total cost was around $6 for the wooden letters, paint and cord.

I think my favourite find of all was this flower pot. We used it to plant rosemary yesterday, which you'll see in my previous post. They don't usually have white ones like this, so I was really excited. I may go back and get a couple more. It was $4.

My last favourite buy lately is these adorable fake succulents. I love real plants and have a lot of them, but I couldn't resist the look of these. They look cute on our entry way board, and on our book shelf.

What are you favorite things to buy at the dollarstore?

The Start of Our Indoor Herb Garden

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope everyone had a very relaxing but productive weekend. I know we did, and I'm feeling really good about everything we accomplished.

This morning I decided to recruit Mason to help me plant some rosemary for the start of our indoor herb garden. Last year I grew Basil from seed and loved it so much that I want to do even more this year. Instead of growing everything from seed, I decided to get some small plants to pot indoors, starting with this rosemary. Let me tell you, it smells amazing.

Mason loved scooping the soil into the pot. I got this really cute little flower pot bucket at our local dollar store for $4. He had fun, but in true Mason fashion he hated getting his hands dirty and asked me to wipe them off after every scoop lol.

Here are the photos we took. I'll be posting more about what herbs we decide to grow later this Spring.
